Fireside YooHoo

Cartoon by Adriane Saunders

We all hear voices. Mainly our own.

Buddhists have an amusing phrase for the movement of thought through our minds: “the drunken monkey.” Jumping up and down, bouncing off walls, screeching, all that perfectly describes undisciplined thought.

Thought can be disciplined. How? Not as you might expect. Not by control, but by simply observing, listening, without attachment to any of the antics of that drunken monkey.

Focused attention and techniques like meditation or yoga, can still the mind, and put the drunken monkey on hold. Attention without attachment, that’s the trick.
